Can we (or should we) get rid of all the stress in our lives?

The surprising answer is NO.

That’s because humans need a little bit of stress to get out of bed each day and get things done. It’s part of our chemical makeup.

Stress is all around us, in all different forms. Some of it is good for us and some of it isn’t good for us.

The great news is… there are lots of ways to handle or “manage” the bad stress, even the stress of things you can’t control.

Why should we even try to take this stress on?

Simply because stress can have negative effects on the body and mind.

Developing a routine for managing stress does have incredible benefits, including:

  • Better Mood
  • Less Anxiety and Depression
  • Stronger immune system
  • Better Digestion
  • Balanced Hormones

Managing stress is a very important priority to make, so let’s get right down to it…

5 Ways to Deal With

Stress You Can’t Control

1. Practice Gratitude – Take time every day to think about what you are grateful for. Then write it down or say it aloud. We can all find something.
(I start with the roof over my head, food in the fridge, and even being grateful for this day.)
2. Reframe the Situation – Changing perspective can sometimes be enough to relieve stress, especially if we’re worried about things that haven’t even happened.  Looking for the positive or silver lining is a huge stress reliever.
(Sometimes when something I want doesn’t happen, I look for the positive in that situation)
3. Manage Your Time – Create a routine for yourself, set mini goals, and be sure to include time for rest, fun, and creativity.
(This gives me an opportunity to finally do something just for myself that I’ve been putting off)
4. Learn to Meditate – Meditation is a way to practice being aware and staying present, even during times of great difficulty. It can lower stress, improve focus, and turn off the chatter in your brain.
(I’ve found that simply focusing on my breathing and visualizing myself somewhere peaceful does the trick)
5. Move a Little – Exercise is a huge stress reliever. Try walking, yoga, or whatever you enjoy. Even cleaning the house counts as exercise! Start a routine and notice how good it feels.
(I’ve found that when I start with a short exercise routine, it turns into a habit that sticks.)

Try one of the above 5 approaches and see if you start noticing a change in how you feel.

You’ll always have to deal with stress – that’s just part of being alive.

But you can change the way you co-exist with stress and make your life SO much better.
