I’m here to talk to you about everyone’s favorite subject… STRESS. A lot of folks don’t care to discuss something that they seem to have NO control over. But is it really true?

It seems there are plenty of “stress myths” floating around out there, so let’s explore 4 of them that I feel are the most surprising.

Myth #1 – We All Experience Stress in the Same Way

Have you ever been stressed out about something and a well-meaning friend or family member tells you to stop worrying because there’s nothing to stress about?

If you’re like me, you may feel frustrated or even more stressed after getting that reaction.

The truth is, what stresses me out is going to be different from what stresses you out. Studies have even shown that one person can develop PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) from an event that another person doesn’t think twice about!

So it’s important to recognize that what causes someone to be stressed is totally unique to them.

Myth #2 – Stress is Always Bad for You

Contrary to what many people think, getting rid of all stress is NOT the goal while living a healthy life.

Here’s the reality of nature: stress is here to stay. It’s how you mismanage stress that has negative effects and can cause health issues, including serious disease.

The key to managing stress is to first recognize what it looks like for YOU and then set out to change a habit or two.

This sense of having more control over your stress can bring real peace of mind. I’ve found in my own life that even a tiny change can make a huge difference.

Myth #3 – Stress and Anxiety are the Same

Stress and anxiety are two words that are often used interchangeably, however they are different and it can be helpful to understand the distinction.
Stress comes from an event (actually your thoughts about the event) that makes you feel upset, while anxiety is when you feel fearful or uneasy (sometimes without knowing why).
Stress may naturally lessen over time, but an anxiety disorder won’t go away on its own and is an actual diagnosis. Knowing the difference can help us pinpoint the right solutions and get better results.

Myth #4 – Stress Equals Success

Many of us associate being stressed out, working longer, and multi-tasking with being more productive. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, it’s been shown that stress and multi-tasking can actually hinder work performance.
Sometimes we may assume that if someone isn’t stressed out, they must be slacking off!
Again, self-awareness is key. Stay focused on what stresses YOU out too much and learn to manage it – that it is what will lead to more success in the long run.
I really hope that debunking these myths about stress has helped you. Knowledge is power after all!
